First Thoughts
The second spire - a response to the first spire and the history of the cathedral.A response that, above all, provokes interpretation by an invocation of violent form, violence being the thread common to the different phases of the history of the cathedral.
A response that must be articulated in a single stroke of visual shock,a single image.
Images
The second spire, the leviathan, erupts from the unfinished third course, the history, blood, disuse, neglect, excavation and reconstruction bare their teeth, revealing jaws of steel and scaffolding.
A collage of elements stripped of their context, stripped consequently of their assumed roles and meanings, forced to coexist with each other in too small a space, fighting amongst themselves, all the while wary of,but invariably influenced by the stranger, the first spire.
Disjunction & Meaninglessness Condition Meanings
The proposal is a collage of a possible ahistorical reconstruction of the history (violence) of the cathedral, juxtaposed against the presently unfinished spire. The objects of the collage, due to their contextual displacement, act as signifiers as opposed to signified, and point towards an outside history, one grounded in the disjunction of form and images.
As a result of this collage of violence, and the almost overpowering influence of the first tower, the collage form becomes open to alternative interpretations, alternative histories.
